French is considered a Romance Language and is spoken by over 220 million people worldwide.

French is not just a language though. Since the 17th Century France has been regarded as a centre of high culture and as such, French culture has played a vital role in shaping world fashion, cultural arts, world cinema, cuisine, culture and sciences. The beauty and artistry of France is reflected in the style and sophistication of the French people, which is world renowned. Paris is regarded as the Fashion Capital of the world, and houses exclusive fashion brands such as Chanel and Louis Vuitton. 

 

The values of French society is reflected in the French motto Liberty, Equality and Fraternity.  Equality and Unity are important values to French people, and Fraternity is found in friendship and support, especially that of family. Mealtimes are nearly always a shared occasion with family, extended family, and good friends.

La Grande Histoire des châteaux forts

Empreints de mystère et de grandeur, les châteaux forts témoignent de la civilisation médiévale et recouvrent une réalité complexe. En voyageant de châteaux en châteaux, des confins de l’Espagne aux montagnes de la Suisse, des landes d’Écosse aux bords de la Dordogne, et grâce aux modélisations en 3D, ce film retrace mille ans de construction militaire médiévale… Les méthodes de construction et les techniques de siège vont connaître une évolution incessante, dans une course effrénée à l'efficacité optimale contre les envahisseurs. Au XIe siècle, apparaissent les premiers châteaux que l’on pourra qualifier de « forts », imprenables avec leurs remparts et leurs tours d'angle. Mais ce bâtiment militaire, est aussi la demeure de l’autorité, du seigneur. Il devient le symbole d’une féodalité en plein développement… A partir du XIVe siècle, les châteaux forts perdent leur importance devant l'efficacité de l’artillerie qui brise désormais toutes les murailles et les architectes militaires adaptent la forme des châteaux pour contrecarrer les nouvelles techniques de siège. Les XVIe et XVIIe siècles consacrent la fin des châteaux forts. L’art de la guerre a évolué en même temps que les structures sociales. Désormais, les villes fortifiées et les nombreuses armées sont plus efficaces pour défendre le royaume. Les châteaux deviennent peu à peu la résidence de seigneur dont l’autorité s’efface au profit de celle du Roi. Ils se transforment en résidences luxueuses. Le château n’a alors plus rien de « fort ».
